Can't stop sailing...

 After being without a trimaran for 6 months, we pulled the trigger on a new Hobie Tandem Island. It's not a Corsair or Weta by any means but it is still sailing. The new models are a huge improvement over the older ones. We had one 6 years ago in between a couple Wetas before we bought our Dash.

It's been a good run...

In 1999 we traded our Carroll Marine Frers 33 for a Corsair Marine F-27. We had allot of fun with the boat my bride named after me...

Here is Fadin' Fast at the 2000 Corsair Nationals in Fort Walton Beach. We actively raced and cruised that boat.

We then sold it and purchased an F-31. We didn't race the first Kimosabi. We rigged it for cruising, spent a number of winters in Florida and one in the Abacos. We cruised allot on Lake Michigan also, once crossing the lake in 5 hours. Allot of great memories...

After a number of years we sold Kimosabi and purchased a great little cruising powerboat. A Rosborough Sedan Cruiser.

We missed sailing and racing so we bought a J80. 

We also had a Cape Dory Typhoon that we daysailed and raced at our local yacht club across the inner bay from our home.

Having three boats in the water for short Wisconsin summers proved challenging...

We missed our Corsairs so we sold the J80 and purchased an F-24 MK1. We sailed that boat in Wisconsin and Florida.

After a while we sold that boat and tried a couple Wetas. Great little boats...

There were other boats in the mix, too many to mention... Finally in April 2020 we sold our Cruising powerboat. We then purchased our Dash.

Unfortunately my body has told me it's time to close this chapter in life. The Dash heads North in the morning to meet it's new owner.

I have found Ian Farrier designed boats to be the most enjoyable sailing vessels I have ever owned.

It's been a great run...

Update 7/24... Kimosabi has sold

The beginning...

Because I started my Farrier-inspired sailing/cruising blog when we owned our F-31, there are no entries regarding our previously owned F-27, a 1992, #305. When we purchased our 27 it was named Frog, with large green mylar frogs on the boat in a number of places. My bride named the boat after me - Fadin Fast... 

We cruised and raced the boat. For cruising we had a boom with our cruising main, for racing I would back the boat up to the garage and just about fill one stall with boat canvas and frames, rugs, heaters, refrigerators, additional added upholstery, pots, pans, teak cockpit soles, etc. I would then load the racing sails and main on it's own boom on the boat and we we're in competitive trim.

It was a great boat and I wonder where it is today...

It's a clear view

When we purchased our Dash a year ago the port side window was cracked down the middle but still sealed. I recaulked the edges then. The port side of the boat faces south. As a result it is constantly heating and expanding and cooling overnight and contracting. This caused the window to begin separating from the VHB tape. So... It needed replacement.

After obtaining a new window from my go-to Corsair dealer Don Wigston, yesterday I removed the old window and today installed the new one. From the photo you will note sharp straight edge tools were used to remove the old VHB tape. Then  citrus based adhesive remover was used, and then the surface was wiped down with acetone. This took a little less than an hour.

Today, armed with 1" 3M VHB tape and Dowsil 795 the new window was installed. This took about 2 hours with the VHB tape installation taking the majority of time.

Mainsheet 10:1 upgrade

Based upon a suggestion from the groups.io F-boat group, I have upgraded the stock 6:1 mainsheet system on my Dash 750 MK2 with a 10:1 system. It was quite easy.

First of all, I switched the line to an 8 mm polyester double braid with an easy hand. Then I purchased two Ronstan series 40 blocks and placed them in the middle of the existing Harken system with one dyneema soft shackle.  I then removed the Harken cam cleat and attached a Spinlock PXR 8-10 cleat. The advantage of the PXR is it is easy to release under load. Smooth and easy...

Finally, I added two eyestraps and two series 40 blocks to the traveler, making it much easier to handle.

Yesterday I took Kimosabi, our 2014 Dash 750 MK2, out with a friend who is a previous Corsair F-24MK1 owner. Average winds were 17-18 with gusts to almost 30. I'm still acquainting myself with the boat so it was good to experience higher winds with this boat. The increased hull volume of the floats is quite apparent. We put a single reef in the main and most of the sailing was with reefed main and jib except for one downwind ride with the screacher. 

 

Our top speed for the day was 17.6 knots with my friend driving the whole time.

 My friend felt the boat was never really pressed and was quite impressed with the newer design floats.

On a diet...

In spite of charging the battery twice since June and not using any power except one day for two hours with the autopilot, the battery would not hold a charge. As a result I decided to replace it with a lithium battery. I found a 20 AH lithium battery on Amazon for $65 delivered. 

Battery power is only needed for the LED lights and the new Autohelm 2,000+. I use a Prostart for heading and speed. I have an old Garmin 76cx that I can use for a chartplotter if needed. 

When I pulled the old battery I discovered the previous owner had purchased a marine starting battery, not a deep cycle battery. That is probably the reason the battery would not hold a charge in that it has been used as a deep cycle for the last couple of years. I am quite sure it was never charged by the previous owner. 

Kimosabi is now 30 lbs. lighter.

We've got company!

The Admiral and I went for a pre-Christmas sail this afternoon and were pleased to find two F-24s out sailing also.

First time we've seen other Farrier inspired tris on the harbor since we got our "new" boat.

The birds...

I've had some issues with birds lately. Besides doing their "duty" all over the boat, they knocked the new sparfly off. I haven't been up the mast to see if the mounting bracket is broken but fortunately, the sparfly landed on the deck. I tried a burgee on a staff to no avail. Today an owl deterrent with a swiveling head was delivered. We'll see how that works...

Some more new threads

Yesterday was a nice light air day, a good opportunity to check out our new spinnaker. We were quite pleased with the outcome. 

Our top speed for the day was 8.5 knots in seven to nine mile per hour winds. Admittedly, the tide was coming in...😎

This is a drill, I repeat, this is a drill

With Monday's weather forecast being a bit questionable, I have prepared kimosabi for a bit of wind by removing all the sails and strapping and tying it to the lift so it won't sway in the wind. Because the boat is so light and the mast so tall, I also have two halyards connected to the top beams of the lift. If the forecast were for a major hurricane, I would have also lowered the mast. It's actually best to remove trailerable boats from boat lifts and store them on a strapped down trailer. That isn't as easy for this old guy as it used to be...

New Threads...

The Admiral finished making a new sailcover yesterday. One advantage of having a partner that owned a Marine Canvas and Upholstery business for 25 years. All of our boats end up "properly dressed"...

Launched and ready

After arriving home and a bit of work raising the main hull waterline kimosabi³ is ready to go. The lift pads needed a bit of adjustment and I continue to tweak the sail controls.

Had a good morning sail with friends this week who are former owners of a Sprint and Tramp. Looking forward to many more...

Summer entertainment

a summer without...

We would love to be sailing on the beautiful waters of the Great lakes this summer. As previously posted kimosabi³ is on the hard at our home in Southwest Florida. 

During the summer of 2012 we were allowed to enter Kimosabi² in a race on the bay of Green Bay. We were the only multihull. It was about a 10 mile beat North to a bouy just south of Green Island, then a spinnaker ride back. It was a reverse handicap start so we were the second to the last boat to start. By the time we reached the windward mark south of Green Island we had passed all but one boat. Once we rounded the mark and popped the chute we took off. We finished an hour and a half ahead of the next boat to finish. After putting the boat back on its mooring and driving down to the marina, we watched the other boats come in from the race. Needless to say my friend who I let drive the entire race enjoyed himself...

Strapped and Jacked

Hurricane season has started in SW Florida and it's also the hot, rainy, no wind season with allot of unsettled weather. So.... Kimosabi³ gets strapped down on the trailer at home for 3 months while we are NOrth.

We got out sailing 4 times in the short time kimosabi was in the water. Hopefully we'll get to enjoy it allot more in the fall...

lift off!

We got the boat on our boat lift today for the first time. I had to amend it obviously to accommodate a folded Corsair. We'll haul the boat out in a week and store it strapped down on the trailer in hurricane mode while we are in northern Wisconsin for the summer. To properly store a boat on a trailer, vehicle stands are placed under the trailer to remove weight from the wheels and the trailer itself is also strapped down in the driveway.

Makin' Wind...

Since launching kimosabi³ last week and getting the boat ready to sail, we have been waiting for a weather window. We have had quite a period of unstable conditions with late morning and afternoon thunderstorms. Anyway, wanting our first ride to be uneventful we were finally able to get out this morning. Winds were forecast to be 6 knots out of the East.

Unfortunately, it never happened. The most we saw was probably 3. However our little 2000 lb boat behaved very well in those conditions.

I was quite pleased with what we were able to do....

Launch Day

Yesterday we got kimosabi³ launched. As I was preparing to raise the mast and straightening halyards, I discovered the previous owner had the screecher halyard connected to the jib. As a result we had to disconnect the mast from the step and work to get the correct halyard on the jib. In the process my phone fell off the boat and smashed. Having fun now... We launched and motored home and I continued to set up the boat. I still have a few issues to resolve concerning the previous owner's use of the boat. While setting it up I discovered the Cunningham and mast rotation control were new, never used. Not surprised...
